Following the great advice here, I got both the security gate to my subdivision and the garage door to my house (with a rolling code) programed into my MDX homelink and it works great! The trick on the rolling code was to push the MDX Homelink button three times (slowly) rather than push and hold.

There is no key switch. There is a procedure to start with a dead battery in the key fob by holding the fob next to the start button, that's all. Thanks Skyline. Just what I initially thought.
