Unlike a manual transmission which takes several pints, you need to get seven or eight quarts into the automatic (5 with a stock pan).

Doing this yourself you are at a disadvantage in that you will only be able to drain out a percentage of the fluid. The fluid in the converter and above the valve body will not drain out by simply draining the pan. Empty refill is 11 quarts. Drain and fill is less than half that amount.
